Even if we ignore the Nintendo Switch (and we will because this is PCWorld) 2017 delivered an incredible number of top-tier. I thought Assassin’s Creed: Origins ($60 on Humble) was fine, but it wasn’t my favorite in the series. By my estimation, 2017 was one of the best years in gaming history. With 2018 coming to a close, Game Rant takes a look back at the best role-playing games that came out this year, from small indies to triple-A releases.

I wasn’t expecting much from Curse of the Pharaohs ($20 on Humble). Honorable mention – Assassin’s Creed: Origins: Curse of the Pharaohs
I wish Bethesda had made it a standalone expansion so more people could experience it without the up-front cost of buying Prey also-though hey, while we’re at it? Play Prey. Players are equipped with a variety of weapons to fight against. The latest installment in the series, Dark Souls III, is no different.

Pair that with Mooncrash’s surprisingly good story, and it deserves a mention here. The RPGs of 2018: Every RPG launching this year and their release dates by Zack Reese on 27 August, 2018 2017 was one of the most exciting years for RPG fans (and video game fans in general). Probably the best and the most infuriating Role Playing Games of all time, the Souls series has been destroying gamer’s lives for a very long time. The production is a classic example of the jRPG genre, returning to many proven ideas and solutions. It forces you out of the comfort zone that games like Prey often let you slip into. An improved version of a spin-off to the Final Fantasy series, released in 2016-2017 on PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.
Thus you’re never quite sure whether you have the right tools for the job, and the result is some really clever problem-solving on the part of the player. The environments are always the same, but weapons and ammo (and I think enemies too) are randomized each run. Basically, Mooncrash takes Prey’s systems and straps them onto a pseudo-roguelike.
